The distinctive part of the team is not the fire engineers. It is that process technologists sit alongside them and read the process before any protection is designed. That is what the method on the Approach page rests on.

The normative base we work to

We have no house standard. The base that applies is set by the jurisdiction the facility is built in, by the licensor package, and by the client and its insurer. On a large facility several of them apply at once, and establishing which requirement governs where they differ is part of the engineering work, not a formality before it.

• The national fire and life safety code in force where the facility is located. For facilities in the Emirates, the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice.
• NFPA — the United States code base, and the one most widely adopted by international operators and EPC contractors irrespective of country.
• EN — the European standards, where the facility, the licensor package or the client calls for them.
• API — recommended practice for refining, storage and pressure relief.
• Insurer requirements — FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets and the requirements of the client’s own insurer. Where these are stricter than the code, they govern the design.
• Product certification — UL Listing, FM Approval, or whatever certification the authority having jurisdiction and the insurer accept for the equipment specified.
• The client’s and operator’s corporate standards, where these govern.

Codes are revised. We work to the edition in force for the project, not to the edition we learned.
