What we calculate in house

  • Fire risk assessment — individual and area risk, tolerability against the client’s criteria
  • Scenario definition and consequence modelling — release, dispersion, ignition, escalation
  • Thermal radiation — pool fire, jet fire, exposure to adjacent equipment and to people
  • Blast overpressure — explosion consequence and its effect on structures and control buildings
  • Fire water demand — governing flow rate, stored volume, simultaneous-scenario assumptions

What analysis is for

Two things. First, to size systems for the scenario that actually governs, instead of the one the table assumes. Second, to justify an alternative where the prescriptive requirement cannot be met — or where meeting it literally would make the facility less safe, which on process plants happens more often than the code anticipates.

A calculation is an argument. It has to survive someone who disagrees with it.
